Task 1 & Task 2

Practice both Writing tasks — Task 1 requires describing visual information (graphs, charts, maps) in at least 150 words. Task 2 asks you to write a discursive essay of at least 250 words on a given topic. Both are assessed on four criteria: Task Achievement, Coherence & Cohesion, Lexical Resource, and Grammatical Range.

Task 1 — Data Description

Academic only: graphs, charts, tables, maps, processes

Describe and compare data presented in one or more graphics. Identify key trends, significant changes, and notable comparisons. Write at least 150 words in 20 minutes.

Write an essay responding to an argument, problem, or issue. Present a clear position, support with examples, and analyze different perspectives. Write at least 250 words in 40 minutes.

Scoring Criteria

How Task 2 Is Marked

Four equally-weighted criteria, each worth 25% of your total Writing score.

Task Achievement

Addresses all parts of the task with relevant ideas. Presents a clear position throughout. Supports arguments with sufficient detail and examples.

Coherence & Cohesion

Logical progression of ideas. Clear paragraphing. Appropriate use of cohesive devices (however, moreover, as a result). No mechanical linking.

Lexical Resource

Wide vocabulary range with natural collocations. Awareness of register and style. Minimal errors in word formation and spelling.

Grammatical Range

Variety of sentence structures (simple, compound, complex). Accurate use of tenses, articles, prepositions, and subject-verb agreement. Minimal grammatical errors.
