DELF covers A1–B2. DALF covers C1–C2. Both are standalone diplomas recognized worldwide.
A1 — Debutant
Can introduce yourself and interact simply.Introduction to French — present tense, basic vocabulary, and everyday phrases for predictable situations.
A2 — Elementaire
Can communicate in routine tasks.Passé composé, imparfait, and basic subjonctif. Describe past events and express opinions simply.
B1 — Intermediaire
Can deal with most travel situations.Subjonctif, relative pronouns, and complex sentence structures. Discuss events, justify opinions, and describe experiences.
B2 — Intermediaire superieur
Can interact with fluency and spontaneity.Advanced grammar: plus-que-parfait, conditionnel, and reported speech. Write essays, discuss abstract topics.
C1 — Autonome superieur
Advanced academic and professional proficiency.Complex subjunctive moods, literary tenses, and nuanced register shifts. Understand implicit meanings and subtleties.
C2 — Maitrise
Near-native mastery of French.Mastery of all French grammar forms, idiomatic expressions, and complex academic texts. Equivalent to an educated native speaker.
